What Is Home Physical Therapy?
Home physical therapy (PT) brings a licensed Physical Therapist directly to your patient — eliminating the challenge of transporting someone with limited mobility to a clinic.
In the Philippines, Physical Therapists are regulated by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) under Republic Act 5680 (Physical Therapy Act). Every PT practicing home visits should have a valid PRC license.
Who Benefits Most from Home PT
Home physical therapy is appropriate for patients who:
- Cannot safely travel to a clinic due to mobility limitations
- Are recovering from stroke, joint replacement, or neurological conditions
- Have chronic pain conditions (low back pain, arthritis)
- Are elderly with balance and fall prevention needs
- Are post-fracture and require rehabilitation at home
- Have had spinal surgery and need supervised exercise
What a Home PT Session Looks Like
A standard home PT session is 45 minutes to 1 hour. Your therapist arrives with portable equipment and conducts the session in your available space — living room, bedroom, or covered outdoor area.
Initial assessment (first session)
Your therapist evaluates range of motion, strength, balance, and functional mobility. A home program is designed based on your patient's diagnosis and goals.
Subsequent sessions
- Therapeutic exercises (strength, flexibility, balance)
- Manual therapy (joint mobilization, soft tissue work)
- Gait training and assistive device instruction
- Pain management techniques (TENS, ultrasound if PT brings equipment)
- Fall prevention strategies for elderly patients
- Family education — teaching caregivers how to safely assist

How Many Sessions Will You Need?
This depends entirely on the condition. Rough guidelines:
| Condition | Typical Sessions |
|---|---|
| Post-stroke rehabilitation | 3–5 sessions per week indefinitely |
| Post-knee replacement | 3x/week for 4–6 weeks |
| Low back pain (acute) | 2–3x/week for 2–3 weeks |
| Elderly fall prevention | 2x/week ongoing |
| Post-fracture (once cast removed) | 2–3x/week for 4–8 weeks |
Your PT will give you a more specific plan after the initial assessment.
What to Prepare at Home
Space: A clear area of at least 3x3 meters for movement and exercises. Remove loose rugs or obstacles.
Equipment your PT may bring: Resistance bands, portable TENS unit, exercise balls.
Documents: Recent imaging (X-ray, MRI) or surgical reports if available. Referral from a physician if you have one.
Clothing: Loose, comfortable clothing that allows the affected area to be accessed (shorts for knee/hip, sleeveless for shoulder).
PT vs. RN — Understanding the Difference
A Physical Therapist and a Registered Nurse serve different purposes in home care:
| Physical Therapist | Registered Nurse | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Rehabilitation and function | Clinical monitoring and procedures |
| Wound care | No | Yes |
| IV medications | No | Yes |
| Exercise prescription | Yes | No |
| Gait training | Yes | Limited |
| When to book | Rehabilitation, mobility, pain | Post-surgical, acute illness, procedures |
Many patients benefit from both — an RN for clinical management and a PT for rehabilitation. These can run concurrently on VisitCare.
